Psychotherapy with Chronic Mind/Body States
Presented By Ken Benau
May 19 | May 26 | June 2 | June 9 | June 16, 2023
12 PM -1 PM Eastern Time
Five, one-hour webinar sessions will explore how we, as psychotherapists and allied health care professionals, can better understand and work integratively with shame and pride in survivors of relational trauma (RT). This course is appropriate for psychotherapists and graduate students at all levels, with at least some experience working with RT survivors. Neurofeedback (NF) will not be discussed in this course, and therefore no NF experience is required of participants. Participants will receive a PowerPoint slides for each session, as well as pertinent written handouts and references.
This course will include:
- Differentiating shame and pride as acute emotions versus chronic, traumatic, mind/body states (“shame and pride states”).
- Identify both adaptive and maladaptive forms of shame and pride, and their relevance in psychotherapy with RT.
- Describe the phenomena of “pro-being pride," an experience of organismic delight in being our true selves with ourselves, others, and in the world. Dr. Benau considers pro-being pride the most powerful antidote to traumatic shame and pride states.
- Explore some relationships between shame, pride, and dissociation, both dissociation as process (“detachment”) and structural dissociation.
- Describe some common patient-therapist, shame-state dynamics, and how to move from “traumatic reactivity” to “reflective responsivity” and processing.
- Introduce current, neuroscientific findings and understandings with respect to shame and pride in RT, and how these can inform psychotherapeutic practice.
- Present clinical vignettes, including verbatim transcripts from several psychotherapy sessions, demonstrating movement from shame states, to authentic pride, pro-being pride, and beyond to states of unity consciousness.
- Opportunities will be given from some Q and A during each one-hour session.
