Sensory processing is an approach which has been used by occupational therapists for decades. Trauma literature also highlights sensory changes following trauma and recovery and yet, practical applications of sensory integration are still an emerging field used by trauma therapists whereas it is mainly used with a population with autism in the occupational therapy field. With more psychotherapists interested in approaches involving the body, we are at an intersection to bridge practical trauma interventions with the most recent research in trauma for therapists

Learning Objectives

1. Explain sensory processing.

2. Describe the clinical manifestations of sensory processing before and after trauma.

3. List three environmental and practical interventions to help clients stabilize their trauma symptoms.

4. Describe how practical interventions foster resource creations within their clients using the 8 senses.

5. Describe how practical interventions using the senses can be integrated in everyday activities.

This presentation is a practical application of trauma neuroscience research and sensory processing theory aimed at professionals (occupational therapists, psychotherapists, etc.) working with trauma patients who wish to integrate trauma evidence-based sensory processing principles in their practice.
